Car freshener cost calculator: cost per hanging card, aroma bead and vent clip
Car fresheners are the classic 'cheap to make' product that quietly loses money. The blank is a few rupees; the printed backing card, bag and fragrance soak are usually more than the blank itself.
What goes into the cost
- Blank. Felt sheet, aroma bead pouch, clay or wood disc — priced per piece after cutting waste.
- Fragrance soak. The heaviest cost line. Weigh a dry and a soaked blank to find true absorption per unit.
- Cord or clip. Elastic loop, ribbon or vent clip, priced per piece.
- Printed card and insert. Custom print is minimum-order-quantity driven; unit cost falls sharply with volume.
- Bag and seal. Poly or foil bag plus heat-seal — required to stop the scent escaping in storage.
- Cutting and soak loss. Offcuts from sheet stock and evaporation during curing.
- Labour and overhead. Cutting, soaking, curing, assembly, sealing and packing.
Worked example: 200 hanging felt fresheners
| Line | Quantity | Rate | Batch cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felt blanks (die-cut) | 200 pcs | ₹4.20 / pc | ₹840 |
| Fragrance soak (3 ml/pc) | 600 ml | ₹2.90 / ml | ₹1,740 |
| Elastic cord + bead | 200 pcs | ₹1.80 / pc | ₹360 |
| Printed backing card | 200 pcs | ₹5.50 / pc | ₹1,100 |
| Foil bag + heat seal | 200 pcs | ₹3.20 / pc | ₹640 |
| Labour (5 hrs @ ₹220) | 1 batch | — | ₹1,100 |
| Overhead (curing space, power) | 1 batch | — | ₹200 |
| Total batch cost | 194 sellable units | ₹5,980 | |
₹30.82 per freshener after six units lost to soak stains and misprints. At a 60% margin the MRP is ₹77 — and the packaging alone (card plus bag) is ₹8.70, nearly a third of unit cost.
Where makers lose money
- Estimating the fragrance soak instead of weighing it — absorption is usually higher than the guess.
- Costing printed cards at the 5,000-piece rate while ordering 200.
- Skipping the sealed bag, then losing scent strength in storage.
- Ignoring felt offcuts when the blank is cut from sheet stock.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost of a car freshener?
Cost the blank, fragrance soak, cord, printed card and sealed bag per unit, add batch labour and overhead, then divide by units that actually pass QC.
Open the calculatorHow much fragrance does a felt freshener absorb?
Typically 2–4 ml for a standard hanging card, but it varies with felt thickness. Weigh ten blanks dry and soaked and divide — do not estimate.
Why is my printed card so expensive per unit?
Print is MOQ driven. At 200 pieces you pay setup across a tiny run. Model a 200-unit and a 1,000-unit variant to see exactly what volume unlocks.
Open the calculatorDo aroma bead fresheners cost less than felt?
Often yes on materials, but they need a sealed pouch and more fill labour. Compare both as variants of the same product rather than assuming.
Should the sealed bag be optional?
No — without it the scent dissipates before sale, and returns cost far more than the ₹3 bag. Cost it in from the start.
How do I price wholesale car fresheners?
Cost per unit first, then work backwards from the wholesale price. 35–40% margin wholesale is common; the 30/40/50/60% table shows whether that survives your unit cost.
Can I reuse one recipe across scents?
Yes — duplicate the variant and change only the fragrance line. Everything else stays identical and the comparison table shows the cost difference per scent.

Save the recipe once and every future price change updates your cost per unit and MRP automatically.
