Wax melt makers

Wax melt cost calculator: cost per clamshell, snap bar and melt

Wax melts look cheap to make until you divide the clamshell and label across a 6-cavity bar. Packaging is often more than half the unit cost.

What goes into the cost

  • Wax. Soy or paraffin melt blend, priced per gram — melt waxes usually hold a higher fragrance load than container wax.
  • Fragrance oil. Commonly 8–12% for melts. Cost by weight of wax, not per bottle.
  • Clamshell or mould. The dominant packaging line. Silicone-moulded shapes trade packaging cost for labour.
  • Label and shrink. CLP or ingredient label, shrink band, header card for snap bars.
  • Colour and embeds. Dye chips, mica, dried botanicals, glitter.
  • Yield loss. Cavity underfills, broken snaps and sink marks.
  • Labour and overhead. Melting, pouring, cooling, snapping, labelling and packing.

Worked example: 80 clamshells of 70 g

Clamshell (6 cavity)80 pcs₹14.00 / pc₹1,120
Label + shrink band80 sets₹6.50 / set₹520
Dye + mica1 batch—₹90
Labour (3 hrs @ ₹250)1 batch—₹750
Overhead (power, wastage)1 batch—₹180
Total batch cost78 sellable clamshells₹5,740

₹73.59 per clamshell, or ₹12.27 per individual melt cavity. At a 55% margin the clamshell MRP is ₹164 — and note the clamshell plus label alone is ₹20.50, over a quarter of the cost.

Where makers lose money

  • Costing per gram of wax and forgetting the clamshell entirely.
  • Using a container-candle fragrance load for melts, then repouring when the throw is weak.
  • Not pricing the header card and shrink for snap bars.
  • Ignoring underfilled cavities, which are unsellable even though the wax is spent.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the cost of a wax melt?

Cost the whole pour — wax, fragrance, colour, clamshell, label — add labour, then divide by sellable clamshells. Divide again by cavities if you want a per-melt figure.

Open the calculator
What fragrance load do wax melts need?

Melt-specific waxes typically hold 8–12%, higher than container wax, because there is no wick to carry the throw. Cost at what you pour.

Are snap bars cheaper than clamshells?

Usually cheaper in packaging but more expensive in labour and breakage. Build one variant for each and compare cost per unit before you switch.

How do I price a wax melt sample or tester?

Create a variant with a single-cavity fill and its own tiny label. Testers should be a known, deliberate loss, not an accident.

Should I include the dye chip cost?

Yes, as a batch-level line. It is small per unit but it belongs in the recipe so your costs stay honest as you scale.

How do I convert a fragrance dose from ml to grams?

Multiply by density — around 1.0 g/ml for most fragrance oils. The converter handles the common craft materials for you.

What margin works for wax melts?

Because the ticket price is low, aim for 55–65% direct so shipping and fees do not wipe out the unit. Check the 30/40/50/60% table before setting a price.
